Abstract:
In spite of a long-standing official aversion to strong horizontal ties among social forces and increasing political pressure on civil society at large, collaboration and alliance-building among non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in China have been expanding in recent years. This talk tries to shed new light on the forces driving this apparent trend and provide conjectures on its significance for the development of Chinese civil society. It draws on evidence from the Zero Waste Alliance—a nationwide, formal alliance of environmental NGOs engaged in policy advocacy, policy monitoring, capacity building, as well as grass-roots mobilisation and education in waste-related matters.
