Synopsis:
US-China strategic competition remains the most defining feature of 21st-century geopolitics, with Southeast Asia at its epicentre due to the region’s geopolitical significance and more recently, its salient role in regional and global supply chains. As the United States and its allies pursue supply chain reshoring, and most decisively, to friendshoring to Southeast Asia for security considerations, China is also redirecting its manufacturing networks towards the region. While Southeast Asian countries generally benefit from this realignment and gaining economic and diplomatic resources, and strategic leverage, the outcomes vary from countries, sectors and policy initiatives. The speaker will provide an initial assessment of how the US-China strategic competition is reshaping supply chains and examine its implications for Southeast Asia, while considering the impact of Trump 2.0’s trade policies, including the ongoing tariff negotiations and evolving US Asia policy.
