Synopsis:

Japan is showing signs of economic recovery, having transitioned from its zero-interest rate policy and prolonged deflation to real wage growth. Japan appears to have finally put the “Lost Decades” behind it. However, critical structural challenges remain, such as addressing an ageing and shrinking population, enhancing labour market mobility and ensuring the sustainability of social security systems. Prof Kikuchi analyses how Japan has changed and what it means for other economies in East Asia and the future of the Japanese economy. He would also be introducing his newly established Institute of Japan in the Global Economy at Waseda University.
