China has acknowledged its overcapacity problems in certain industries for years, a topic that has garnered international attention, including strong criticism from the United States. In this presentation, Prof Chen will first delve into the overall production capacity situation in China’s manufacturing sector before discussing the criteria used to determine whether overcapacity is a genuine concern. Based on the criteria, Prof Chen will explore the alleged overcapacity problems in key industries such as steel, electronic vehicles, solar panels, and lithium batteries. He will conclude by addressing the broader controversy surrounding overcapacity in China and China’s potential strategies towards the controversy.
