Singapore/Kiel, 30 September 2025 – The East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore (EAI-NUS) and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (Kiel Institute) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen collaboration and foster greater exchange between Europe and Asia.

Recognizing the urgency of global economic and social challenges, both institutions reaffirm their shared commitment to producing rigorous, policy-relevant research that informs decision-making worldwide. Under the new agreement, EAI and the Kiel Institute will launch a series of collaborative initiatives designed to enhance dialogue and joint scholarship.

Key areas of cooperation will include:

• Joint conferences/events bringing together leading academics, policymakers, and practitioners from Asia and Europe.
• Joint research projects and publications, generating insights on critical issues such as global trade, economic governance, and regional integration.
• Visiting fellowships and exchanges, encouraging the mobility of scholars and facilitating the cross-pollination of ideas.
• Joint briefings to policymakers and the broader public, strengthening the bridge between academic research and real-world decision-making.

“Global challenges require closer cooperation. This partnership with the Kiel Institute  provides an invaluable platform for EAI to connect Asia with Europe through world-class research and dialogue,” said Professor Alfred Schipke, Director of the East Asian Institute.

“We are delighted to strengthen our ties with EAI. Together we will explore the pressing issues shaping our economies and societies, from technological change to sustainable development,” added Professor Moritz Schularick, President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

The collaboration, effective from 1 October 2025, marks an important step toward deepening mutual understanding and cooperation between Asia and Europe.
