Synopsis:
In response to President Trump’s 2025 tariff aggression—targeting China and nearly all major economies—ASEAN has voiced strong concerns over policies that threaten decades of US-ASEAN cooperation and global economic stability. In a Joint Statement issued on 10 April, ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to a rules-based multilateral trading system and a strategy of diversified, intra-regional economic engagement. This seminar examines the broader implications of US-China decoupling for ASEAN, including disrupted supply chains, reduced investment flows and intensified intra-ASEAN trade challenges. Drawing on insights into enhancing intra–East Asian trade and investment integration, diversifying partnerships with regions such as the EU, the Middle East, Eurasia, Latin America and Africa, and President Xi’s recent Southeast Asia tour, the speaker highlights ASEAN’s delicate balancing act in a fragmenting global order.
Note:
Registration is required for this hybrid seminar, which will be held on the Chatham House rule.
